Marillac’s Family Services department is committed to helping families on the West Side of Chicago address their basic needs by providing a wide array of services. Our goal is to strengthen and empower families in need by helping adults increase their skills and knowledge of resources.

Utility Assistance

Please call to verify hours, as they may change seasonally. 

Marillac contracts with CEDA to provide assistance with heating and electric bills:
-LIHEAP: Choose between a one-time benefit & income-based monthly budget bills.
-ComEd Hardship is offered for households in a crisis situation.
-Weatherization: Have home assessed and weatherproofing upgrades made, free of charge to eligible tenants and homeowners.

Required Proof for LIHEAP and Weatherization:

For all household members:
-Social Security cards
-Income proof for last 30 days prior to application
-Utility bills: less than 30 days old
-Disconnection notices (if applicable)
-Proof of ownership (Weatherization only)

Required Proof for ComEd Hardship

-Most recent ComEd bill (less than 30 days old
-Identity proof for Customer of Record
   -State ID/Driver’s License AND Social Security card 
Proof of hardship that has occurred in the household in the last 6 months, including:
-Loss of employment or unexpected loss of income
-Grandparents raising grandchildren
-Medical        -Disability        
-Family crisis  -Property damage
-Military         -Victimized by criminal activity
-Senior in-home care
-Subsidized housing eligibility

Emergency Assistance

Catholic Charities’ Emergency Assistance Department has an office located in Family Services and “provides concrete assistance to individuals and families whose lives have been disrupted by unplanned events, such as domestic crisis, fire, unemployment, relocation, or who for any reason are in need of emergency food and/or clothing.”

Public Benefits Application Assistance 

Staff assist clients in completing applications for the following benefits:
-SNAP (Food Stamps) 
-Cash Benefits (TANF/GA)
-Medical Card
-Benefit Access Application (Formerly Circuit Breaker: Free transit cards and license plate discount for seniors 65+ and people with disabilities)

  Adult Education

Hours: Monday-Thursday 9AM-12PM

Adult basic education and pre-GED classes are offered for adults who have not completed high school. 

-Designed to meet needs of individual students
-Learn in a small group setting & receive one-on-one assistance
-Sign up at Marillac’s Front Desk
